A toll road requires motorists by law to pay a fee known as a 'toll' to drive on that road or motorway.

Cash is no longer accepted on NSW toll roads. By setting up an electronic tag or pass you can drive through toll collection points without stopping and your toll will be automatically charged to your account. You can set up a pass before you leave home or up to 3 days after you travel on a NSW toll road.

There are nine toll roads in NSW:

  • Sydney Harbour Bridge
  • Sydney Harbour Tunnel
  • Hills M2 Motorway
  • M5 South-West Motorway
  • Westlink M7 Motorway
  • Eastern Distrubutor
  • Cross City Tunnel
  • Lane Cove Tunnel

A tag is a physical product that is fitted to the windscreen of your car. Your tag will beep as you drive through the toll collection point and will automatically deduct the toll charge from your tag account. All Australian issued electronic tags are designed for use on all Australian toll roads. View our tag products.

A pass is a 'virtual' tolling product that links your vehicle's Licence Plate Number to the pass, allowing you to pay for travel on toll roads for a set period of time. As you drive through the toll collection point your Licence Plate Number will be photographed, matched to your pass and then the toll plus a 75 cent Vehicle Matching fee will be charged to your nominated credit card1 or debit card. All NSW issued passes are only valid for travel on NSW toll roads. Our eMU (electronic motorway user) Pass is valid for up to 30 days and can be set up before you leave home or up to 3 days after travelling on a NSW toll road. Find out more.

Yes, the toll charged will depend on the type of vehicle you are driving. When you set up a tag or pass account you will be asked to specify the type of vehicle.

Note, some toll roads also set a 'Class 3' toll rate for Victorian and Queensland registered light commercial vehicles. Generally these commercial vehicles have dimensions similar to a two axle rigid truck with a gross vehicle mass of between 1.5 tonnes and 4.5 tonnes.

If you are towing another vehicle such as a trailer, caravan or boat you will need to register the Licence Plate Number and state of registration for both the vehicle AND the vehicle being towed.

eMU Pass

If purchasing online, an additional eMU Pass is required to be registered for a start-up fee of $1.50 to cover the vehicle you are towing.

If purchasing through a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre or by phone, the start-up fee is $3.30 fee. This fee will cover both your vehicle and the vehicle you are towing.

If purchasing an eMU pass from a participating petrol station or retail outlet the cost of the $5.95 pass will cover both your vehicle and the vehicle you are towing.

When you drive through a toll collection point you will be charged for only one Vehicle Matching fee and the applicable toll charge.

Electronic tag

You need one tag mounted on the windscreen of the vehicle that is being driven. You do not need a tag for the vehicle being towed but make sure you have registered the Licence Plate Number of both the vehicle and the vehicle being towed on your tag account.

Log in to myE-Toll Account, click on 'Vehicle details', then select the 'List all vehicles' tick box and click 'Search'. You can then add, edit or delete vehicles linked to your account.

If you place your order:

Online or by phone - Tags will be sent free of charge by registered mail. In most cases, you should receive your tag within 7-10 business days. Tags will be despatched as soon as we have obtained funds from your nominated funding source. If you are choosing a direct debit payment option, a Direct Debit form must be completed and returned to us before we can begin the account opening process.

In a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre - Your account will be opened immediately and the tag(s) issued to you on the spot. The account will be active once we have successfully obtained funds from your nominated funding source. In most cases your account will then be active the following day. Find a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre near you.

Only one vehicle Licence Plate Number can be registered on any NSW issued pass. Multiple passes can be purchased.

If you are towing another vehicle such as a trailer, caravan or boat you will need to purchase two eMU Passes. One for your vehicle and an additional one for the vehicle being towed. When you drive through a toll collection point you will be charged for only one video processing fee and the applicable toll charge.

If purchasing online an additional eMU Pass is required to be registered for a start-up fee of $1.50 to cover the vehicle you are towing.

If purchasing through a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre or by phone the $3.30 start up fee will cover both your vehicle and the vehicle you are towing.

If purchasing an eMU Pass from a participating petrol station or retail outlet the cost of the $5.95 pass will cover both your vehicle and the vehicle you are towing.

As you drive through the toll collection point your vehicle's Licence Plate Number will be photographed and matched to your eMU Pass. A 75 cent video processing fee will be charged to your nominated credit card or debit card in addition to any toll charges incurred.

You pay the registration fee upfront when you purchase an eMU Pass. The tolls and video processing fees will be charged to your credit card on an ongoing basis, with a final collection approximately 22 days after the nominated end date of your travel. You will receive an itemised statement once a successful payment has been processed.

You can update any details registered on your eMU Pass prior to the pass start date by calling 13 18 65.

Update your eMU Pass duration - You can update the travel end date providing your eMU Pass is still active and the total travel duration does not exceed 30 days. Call 13 18 65 to update your eMU Pass duration.

Cancel your eMU Pass - You can cancel your eMU Pass by calling 13 18 65. There is no fee to cancel your eMU Pass, however we are unable to refund the start up fee that you paid and you will be liable for any tolls and charges that are incurred up to one hour after the cancellation.

No – with any of our products, motorcyclists do not need to carry an actual tag. Your Licence Plate Number is photographed at toll collection points and matched back to your ERider account. You do not get charged a 'vehicle matching fee' for this service.

Yes – you can travel on other toll roads using your ERider (normal tolls apply). When your balance falls below $40, we'll top it up via your chosen payment method.

You can only have one Licence Plate Number attached to a single ERider account. If you wish to use two motorcycles, you will need to set up two separate ERiders.

No – we don't offer a manual renewal option for ERider, however you can cancel your ERider at any time by calling 13 18 65. If you choose to cancel your ERider, RMS will refund the last ERider Quarterly fee paid by you on a pro-rata basis depending on when it is cancelled in the calender month.

Automatic renewal of the ERider will be made on the 1st day of each new quarter via your chosen payment method. If all banking attempts fail, your account will automatically close. You will then no longer be covered for unlimited travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Sydney Harbour Tunnel or on any other toll road. Any tolls incurred will then result in a Toll Notice being issued.

If you receive a Toll Notice you are required by law to respond to it. A Toll Notice will be issued if a toll (and your License Plate Number) was not successfully matched to your account. You will be required to complete the payment details on the Toll Notice by supplying your ERider account number and tag number. Motorcyclists with an ERider are not provided with an actual tag however you are provided with a tag number for reference only in order to pay toll notices. You may obtain this number from any account statement, by logging in to your ERider account and selecting the Account Overview page, or by contacting one of our friendly staff on 13 18 65.

No – ERider is only applicable for one motorcycle Licence Plate Number and it cannot be combined with an existing E–Toll account.

No, ERider is charged on a pro-rata amount for your first partial quarter. The further into the quarter, the less you will be charged. You can view the pro-rata rates on the ERider landing page. Our fixed quarterly billing dates are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October each year.

From 1 June 2013, Roads and Maritime Services introduced a vehicle matching fee of 55 cents for people travelling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Tunnel without a valid Tag to cover the cost of matching a photo of number plates to a tolling account.
The fee applies:

  • If you travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Tunnel without a tag
  • If you travel on a toll road with a tag that your account has insufficient funds
  • If your tag is incorrectly fitted (and fails to function)
  • And (in all cases) a Toll Notice has not been sent to you

Most toll road operators across Australia already charge similar vehicle matching or 'No Tag' fees and from 1 June we will bring the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel in line with other toll road providers. As of 1 June, 'Vehicle Matching' fees on all toll roads may be passed on to our customers.
Some of the other toll operators have been charging these fees for 8 years.
This just brings the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel in line with other toll roads.
Just as all passengers need to carry a valid ticket or pass to travel on public transport, customers travelling on toll roads need to remember to have their tag in their vehicle or have a valid pass.

Now, a customer's second or third tag will no longer require a deposit. These tags are free to help our customers avoid the 'vehicle matching' fees.

The free tags are capped at the second and third tag per account, so if you have more than three vehicles on an account you will need to pay the $40 deposit for the 4th & 5th vehicle etc.

There is no limit to how many vehicles that you have on one account. Alternatively, you can open more than one account.

If you have three accounts you can have a second and third tag free for each of these accounts.

Yes. If you close your account - you will be refunded your deposit as is the case now.
When an account is closed, the deposit is used to pay for the outstanding balance.
If there is any credit on the closure when the account is closed the balance and deposit is refunded.
The deposit settles the amount owed with the remainder of funds given to the customer.

Free tags are available by calling 13 18 65 or by going into a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre.
If your tag is faulty or you need additional brackets, please go to your nearest NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre or contact 13 18 65.

No problem - just call 13 18 65 or visit a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre and we can check your account is in working order.
If you have a tag and an E-Toll account - you will not be charged the 'vehicle matching' fee, as long as your tag is within your vehicle when travelling on a toll road, is fitted correctly, working and has sufficient funds.

'Vehicle Matching' fees only apply when a tag account is used to pay for the toll. These fees do not apply to eMU Pass accounts as these are a casual pass product, which have their own set of associated fees. Call 13 18 65 for more information.

The free tags are for customers with RMS tags only. Please contact your tag provider in this case.

No problem, just advise us, so we can remove your old car from your E-Toll account and add your new one. You can then arrange for an additional tag if required.

Your RMS tag should 'beep' when you go through a toll point. If you don't hear a 'beep' please contact us on 13 18 65, or visit a NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre.
If you don't have an RMS tag you should contact your tag company.

  • Make sure your tag is in your vehicle, fitted correctly, works and has sufficient funds.
  • Make sure your current Licence Plate number is registered to your E-Toll account.
You can update your registered Licence Plate Numbers by logging in to your myE-Toll account or by calling 13 18 65. (You must also make sure your tag is correctly fitted and functioning).
  • Make sure your tag is working.
If you don't hear a sound from your tag when you pass through a toll point, your tag may be incorrectly installed or may not be working. If you believe your tag is not working and you have been charged a 'No Tag' fee or 'Toll Notice Transfer Fee' please call 13 18 65 or take your tag to your nearest NSW Registry / Service NSW Centre.

Financial institutions charge the government merchant fees whenever they provide a payment service.

The NSW Treasury requires all NSW government agencies to recover these additional costs. This process is known as "merchant fee recovery".

In line with the Government's decision to recover credit cards costs, Merchant Fees will be passed on for account payments made by Visa, MasterCard and Amex. Diners Club cards will no longer be accepted as a form of payment for RMS E-Toll transactions.

Merchant fees do not apply on Direct Debit payments.

For credit card payments, the merchant fee is a percentage of the total payment amount. The percentage depends on whether the card is a MasterCard, Visa or American Express. The merchant fee including GST will be added on top of the total amount you need to pay.

When you make a credit or debit payment using a MasterCard or Visa card, the merchant fee recovered is up to 0.44% of the total amount payable.

When you make a payment using an American Express card, the merchant fee recovered is up to 1.54% (currently 1.056%) of the total amount payable.

Yes. You can avoid merchant fees by switching your account to direct debit. You can also top up your account by using direct debit, EFTPOS, cash or cheque at any Registry or Service Centre.

To switch to Direct Debit you will need to complete and return a Direct Debit Authority Form. To switch, log on to your account to obtain a Direct Debit form or call 13 18 65.

Before you confirm your payment details, you will be shown dollar amounts for each of the following:

  • the cost of your transaction
  • the merchant fee amount
  • the total amount that will be charged to your credit card

Why are you introducing postal statement fees?

E-Toll Business Operation Centre
PO Box 1447
Parramatta NSW 2124

The final collection of money owing will be collected upon request of account closure. Any refund (including refund of tag deposit if applicable) will be processed 31 days after the tag has been received.

If your account was linked to a credit card or debit card, you will be refunded directly into your credit card or debit card.

We will keep your account open for a minimum of 93 days after your closure request to ensure that you do not receive Toll Notices for trips that should be covered by your account.

The NSW Government M5 Cashback scheme allows NSW residents to claim back the value of tolls (excluding GST) paid while using privately registered vehicles on the M5 South Western Motorway.

If you own a NSW registered vehicle that is registered for general private, pension or charitable use, you can claim Cashback under the M5 Cashback Scheme.

Registering for M5 Cashback

Apply for an E-Toll or Easy Toll Tag Account and you can register for M5 Cashback by ticking the M5 Cashback box in the application process. If you already have an E-Toll or Easy Toll Tag Account but have not yet registered for the scheme, you can do so by speaking to one of our customer service representatives on 13 18 65.

Your eligibility for a Cashback rebate starts from the first day of the month in which you registered for Cashback.

Claiming M5 Cashback

There are two ways to claim Cashback:

  1. Online: Simply login to your account on myetoll.com.au and click on the 'Claim Cashback' link on the Account Overview screen. Follow the easy steps and submit your claim online.

Motorists are required by law to pay the toll when they drive on a toll road. You can set up a pass before you leave home or up to 3 days after you use a toll road.

If you choose not to set up a tag or pass product, a Toll Notice will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle that used the toll road. The owner of the vehicle is required by law to pay the Toll Notice, which will include the unpaid toll amount and an administration fee. Repeated failure to respond to and pay a Toll Notice may result in the matter being referred to the State Debt Recovery Office (SDRO) for recovery action by issue of a Penalty Notice.

By setting up a tag account, you can pay for toll notices you receive prior to installing your electronic tag. The 'Toll Notice Administration' fee on the toll notice will be reduced to a lower cost 'Toll Notice Transfer' fee (from 1 June 2013) if you pay the toll notice via your tag account.

The Toll Notice Administration fee for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel increased from $5 to $10 from 1 June 2013 to align with other toll road operators.

You have up to 3 days after your trip to pay for your tolls. To do this, you must set up a pass.

If you choose not to set up a tag or pass, a Toll Notice will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle that used the toll road. The owner of the vehicle is required by law to pay the Toll Notice, which will include the unpaid toll amount and an administration fee.

If you have received a Toll Notice for travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or Sydney Harbour Tunnel, you can pay your Toll Notice online or by calling 13 18 65 with your credit card, Visa/MasterCard debit card or tag account details. You can also pay by cheque or money order by following the instructions at the bottom of the Toll Notice.

To pay a Toll Notice you have received from any other toll road operator, please follow the instructions on the bottom of the Toll Notice.

If you have travelled with a tag or pass and still received a Toll Notice, you can pay your Toll Notice online or by calling 13 18 65 and providing your tag details. A 'Toll Notice Transfer' fee applies if you use your tag account to pay for your toll notice.

The 'Toll Notice Administration' fee for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel increased from $5 to $10 in 1 June 2013 to align with other toll road operators.

If you were not the registered owner of the vehicle at the time of the travel date listed on the Toll Notice, please complete a Statutory Declaration Form and return to the Toll Road Operator.

Note: If you have an electronic tag account and have nominated the Licence Plate Number, you will remain liable for any toll charges debited to your account until you advise RMS E-Toll to remove the Licence Plate Number of the vehicle that has been sold from your tag account. Ensure only current registrations are listed.
