Sold a vehicle (notice of disposal)


Customer details

This screen requires you to authenticate your customer details. It will only be presented to you if you have not logged in previously using your account details.
You must enter all the fields before you can proceed. They are not case-sensitive.

Steps

  1. Enter your Surname.
  2. Enter your NSW Driver licence or Photo card number.
  3. Enter your Card number located on the front of your NSW Driver licence or Photo card.
  4. Click on Continue to proceed.
  5. Upon a successful authentication, you will be taken to the Vehicle details sreen where you will need your Plate and Vin/Chassis number.

Vehicle details

This screen requires you to enter the details of the vehicle that you have sold. You must enter all fields to proceed. The Plate and VIN/Chassis details can be found on the vehicle's registration papers.

Vehicles with a cancelled registration are not eligible to use this service. A registration is cancelled if it has an overdue payment of 3 months or more. If the buyer wants to re-register the vehicle, they must attend a registry.

The vehicle must not be stolen.

Please follow these steps to enter your vehicle details.

Steps

  1. Enter the Plate number of the vehicle you have just sold/disposed of.
  2. Enter the last four digits of the VIN/Chassis number.
  3. Click Continue to proceed.
  4. You will proceed to the Buyer details page.

Note:

If you have logged on using your online account, you will need to enter your vehicle details and click on the Accept the Terms & Conditions button to proceed with lodging a Notice of Disposal online.

If you have decided to sell your vehicle after ordering a special number plate for direct delivery and the RMS has not been advised that your new plate has been affixed to the vehicle, you will receive a notification letter from the RMS requesting for the return of the new plates upon successfully lodging a Notice of Disposal.

Buyer details

This screen requires you to enter the details of the Buyer who has purchased your car.

Please note the following:

  1. The buyer must be either an existing customer OR a registered Licensed Dealer with the RMS. Please complete only one Buyer option.
  2. Organisations are not eligible to use this service.
  3. The buyer must not have any outstanding restrictions or sanctions.
  4. To use this online service the buyer of a light vehicle must not be under 16, or if a heavy vehicle the minimum age is 18. In these circumstances the buyer is required to attend a registry.
  5. If the transfer has already been registered either online or at a Registry, the Notice of disposal will not be processed and a message will be displayed advising this.

Steps

To complete the Notice of disposal, please enter the following details:

  1. Enter the Buyer surname and the Buyer driver licence number
    OR
  2. Enter the Dealer name and the Dealer licence number.
  3. Enter the Date of disposal. This must be the date you sold/disposed of the vehicle. Please use the DD/MM/YYYY format.
  4. Enter the Selling price the vehicle was sold for. Please enter whole numbers only. Entering symbols such as $ or decimal points is not required.
  5. Click Continue to proceed.
  6. You will proceed to the Confirm Notice of disposal details page.

Confirm details

This screen allows you to view and confirm all the details you have entered before the notice of disposal
is processed and registered in our system.

Steps

Please check that all the information on this page is correct:

  1. Your Surname (seller)
  2. Your Driver licence number (seller)
  3. Plate number
  4. VIN/Chassis number
  5. The Buyer surname AND the Buyer driver licence number
    OR
  6. The Dealer name AND Dealer licence number
  7. The Date of disposal
  8. The Selling price
  9. Click on the Confirm button to process the Notice of disposal
    OR
    Click Back to return to previous pages to alter the details if required.
  10. If there are no errors encountered, you will proceed to the Completed notice of disposal screen where you will be able to print or email the Notice of disposal details.

Completed notice of disposal

This screen allows you to email and/or print your Notice of disposal details for future reference. If convenient, you can also advise the buyer of your vehicle to go online to complete a 'Transfer of registration' to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.

Customer who has logged in using their online account

Email your Notice of Disposal steps

If you have logged in using your online account, you can email the Notice of disposal details to your
registered email address.

  1. Review your registered email address
  2. If the registered email address is correct click Send
    OR
  3. If the registered email address is NOT correct or you would like to send the Notice of disposal to an alternative email address then:
  4. Enter in the alternative email address
  5. Confirm your alternative email address by typing it in again.
  6. If you would like to update your registered email address with your alternative email address, then click on the Update my existing Email address check box, otherwise leave this blank.
  7. Click Send

Note:

If you have selected to update your registered email address with your alternative email address, the alternative email address provided will be checked if it is in a proper format (ie format is username@domain; for example: johnsmith@gmail.com), as well as if it is valid based on a domain check. The system may treat an email address as invalid if the domain name does not exist or the domain name check returns an error.

Email your Notice of Disposal steps

If you would like to send the Notice of disposal to an email address then:

  1. Enter in your email address
  2. Confirm your email address by typing it in again.
  3. Click Send

Print your Notice of Disposal steps

To print your Notice of disposal you have 2 options:

  1. Click on the Print PDF button to use Adobe PDF software to view and print your notice. (You may download a free version of Adobe software using the link provided if this software is not currently installed on your computer.
  2. Click on the Print HTML button. This will open a new window, allowing you to print a clean copy of your notice.
